Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. (Pablo Picasso)
Untitled (Pattern 2)
24 x 18 inches, thread embroidered on paperCurrently on display at FiveMyles in NY, part of an exhibition entitled Art/Sewn.
I like the glyph-like quality of the embroidered pattern which hints at some hidden meaning. Is the language ancient or alien? Is the text sacred or profane? The medium itself leads to more questions about the purpose and importance of the text. For me, the ephemeral nature of the materials, (paper and fiber), contrasted with the time-consuming process of embroidery, (a skill usually associated with female activity), creates a suggestive dichotomy.
(As an aside, Ms. Barletta keeps an interesting record of art she likes on her blog if you want to see work from other fiber artists.)
ED CHAPMAN’S JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE
This unique mosaic of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix was made by Ed Chapman from more than 5000 plectrums.
The portrait was sold for £23,000 after it was auctioned at Abbey Road Studios in London as part of Cancer Research’s Sound & Vision fundraiser.
At the auction in 2009 Ed’s ceramic portrait of John Lennon also raised thousands for the charity.
Ed said: “I am very happy to have raised so much money from something that was fun to make. Jimi is a guitar legend and nobody played a Fender guitar quite like him.
“I decided to use plectrums to create a portrait of him because I like experimenting with different materials and textures and I think it is a fitting tribute.”
Wooooaaa!!!! *_*
